Primitive Ignorant by Steve GullickPrimitive Ignorant releases a video for High Rise Vampires ahead of the upcoming new EP, Life Or Death. Andy Brown shares his thoughts for Louder Than War.

When Sym Gharial re-emerged last year as Primitive Ignorant, it was the sound of an artist in the throes of inspiration. Sikh Punk was an album that drew on Gharial’s experiences with racism, mental health and addiction whilst musically unveiling a whole new sound for the ex-Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster bassist. That thirst for creativity and willingness to explore highly personal subject matter continues with the new single, High Rise Vampires.

A track about confronting addiction and (quite literally) coming back from the dead, the lyrics recall the time (many years ago) when Gharial was resuscitated after an overdose. The track finds him collaborating with vocalist Jamie Hall who does a superb job delivering the dark, heart-wrenching lyrics. The music continues to push the Primitive Ignorant sound into new and interesting places; building layers of distorted electronics, fuzzy bass and atmospheric percussion. Hall’s vocals go from ghoulish spoken word to soaring melancholy; moving through the track like a ghost in the machine.

High Rise Vampires carries an immensely personal yet hopeful and highly resonant message. A message of gratitude, hope, and finding your way out of the dark. It’s a song about plunging into the very darkest depths before resurfacing with a renewed lust for life. The upcoming EP begins with this dark, near-cataclysmic event yet ends with the birth of Gharial’s daughter, Amaya. Gharial continues to plough his own furrow with satisfyingly startling results: menacing, beautifully dramatic and quite unlike anything else I’ve heard this year.

The brilliant Halloween-goes-psychedelic video comes courtesy of long-time collaborator, Steve Gullick. The Life Or Death EP will be with us very soon and promises an abundance of life, death, heart and soul.
