We featured West London blues punks Taurus Trakker back in April 2012 as part of our New Band of the Day section; Carl Stanley was particularly impressed with the bands honesty and their ability to write songs crammed full of fantastic rhythm and chunky riffs.
Well August finds Taurus Trakker in a generous mood… First off, they’re offering a FREE ”Ëœdownload-only double A-side’ package at Soundcloud which includes Mick Jones-produced early single ”ËœMonks, Punks & Drunks’, plus opening number from 2012’s critically acclaimed ”ËœBuilding Ten’ album, ”ËœLucky’.
Intended to give listeners a second chance to sampler Taurus Trakker’s work to date, before new EP ”ËœA Rakket U Trust’ is released on October 1st, the download package is also perfectly timed to coincide with the run-up to this year’s Notting Hill Carnival; the inspiration for ”ËœLucky’s frantic rock ”Ëœn’ soul narrative. The band will be spreading carnival spirit early and laying on a free local gig, when they resurrect their popular ”ËœRock ”Ëœn’ Roll Circus’ club night at new Ladbroke Grove venue The Retro this Friday 10th August.
Having previously championed The Jim Jones Revue – almost 4 years before the gritty garage group made their unlikely appearance on Letterman – the ‘Circus undoubtedly has an eye for an entertaining act.
Taurus Trakker’s second album ”ËœBuilding Ten’ has barely been out two months and already it’s brought the West London duo national paper praise (with The Mirror’s Gavin Martin a confirmed fan), and gig offers from America’s East Coast (with New Jersey’s ‘Strummerjam’ event inviting them to appear in December). The fact ‘Building Ten’s wing ”Ëœn’ prayer-propelled punk-blues is deeply rooted in personal experience and strongly inspired by the band’s local area is not so much an irony, in light of the widespread approval it has met with, as an indication that solid, honest songwriting still strikes a chord far and wide; and Taurus Trakker write just such tunes.
Before the August bank holiday insanity rolls into town again, Taurus Trakker are getting into the spirit by bringing the ”ËœRock ”Ëœn’ Roll Circus’ back to Ladbroke Grove on the 10th, when they reopen the club at new venue The Retro. The August 10th bill promises live bands, sideshow-style performances (including “erotic origami”Â!), DJ Fly Garrick (with the eclectic playlist he calls an ”Ëœantidote to cultural prohibition’) and, of course, Taurus Trakker themselves, showcasing tunes from the forthcoming ”ËœA Rakket U Trust’.
Amongst the EP tracks due to be aired here are ”ËœLong Gone’; a slow-burning, heartstring-strum of shimmering guitar and saxophone touches, provided by regular onstage collaborator Dave Wright (X-Ray Spex), and ”ËœWild Woman In A Small Town’; an encouragement to live like no-one’s gossiping, which finds some of Muscatt”Ëœs finest Dylan-inflected lyrical work fired off at a gutsy, galloping, punk rock pace. Overall, ”ËœA Rakket U Trust’ perhaps puts more punk boot into the blues than the recent album, but retains as its most irresistible charm a raw, unswerving adherence to the ”Ëœwrite what you know’ principle.ÂÂ
Some songwriting circles may call the method a cliché, but Taurus Trakker demonstrate that – done with all the honesty and individuality it demands – it remains the makings of a classic.
Expect more release details and live dates TBA soon.
